Medicare can be a very complicated system to understand. The best product is based on the individual needs of each person. A Medicare Advisor will be able to educate you on the different parts of Medicare and the how to sign up on time. An Advisor will also be able to help you avoid fees and penalties for not signing up, or not having credible coverage. At the Paumanok Insurance Agency, we meet with our clients in person to educate them on Medicare and assess their personal needs. We help our clients choose the best coverage for them at the most affordable price. This service is at no cost to you!

Original Medicare is provided through the federal government. There are two parts. Part A covers hospital stays. If you worked for 10 years, or 40 quarters in the United States you are entitled to Part A Medicare. You do not need to sign up, you automatically are enrolled when you turn 65. Part A has no monthly fees, but a deductible must be met first, when you enter the hospital before your expenses are covered. Part B covers doctor visits. You must sign up for Part B with Social Security if you do not have credible health coverage. Failing to sign up could result in penalties and fees. Part B has a monthly premium that is determined by income. When you combine Part A and Part B of original Medicare, you are covered at 80% for hospital and doctor fees.

A Supplement Plan is a Medicare Insurance Gap plan that covers the expenses original Medicare does not. Supplement plan have monthly premium costs and a deductible. Once the deductible is met all other expenses are covered. Supplement Plans do not include extra services such as prescription drugs', hearing, vision or dental plans. These plans must be purchased separately. It is also important to note that the monthly premium for a Supplement Plan is in addition to the monthly Premium you pay for your Part B Medicare.

If you're unsure whether a Supplement is right for you or which one to choose, it’s a good idea to review your options during your plan's annual enrollment period or consult with a Medicare Advisor. Click below to made an appointment we come to you and our services are at no cost to you.

A Medicare Advantage Plan also covers expenses that are not covered by original Medicare. Advantage Plans work similar to group plans you may be familiar with from your employer. Most Advantage Plans have no monthly premiums. You are required to pay copays for hospital and doctors visits and you are part of a doctor network. Advantage plans also cover extra services such as prescription drugs, dental and more.

In the U.S., you are required to have a prescription drug plan in the following situations:

  1. Medicare Beneficiaries: If you are 65 or older or have a qualifying disability, you must have a prescription drug plan if you are enrolled in Medicare and don't have other creditable prescription drug coverage (such as through an employer, union, or a spouse’s plan). This plan is typically called Part D.

    • When to enroll: You can sign up for Medicare Part D when you first become eligible for Medicare. If you delay signing up without other creditable coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty.

  1. Employer or Union Health Plans: If you are covered by an employer or union health plan that includes prescription drug coverage, you may not need a separate Part D plan. However, if the coverage is not considered creditable, you may need to sign up for Part D to avoid penalties.

  2. Affordable Care Act (ACA) Plans: If you have health insurance through the ACA marketplace and need prescription drug coverage, you'll generally need to enroll in a plan that includes it or purchase a separate stand-alone prescription drug plan (PDP).

If you're unsure whether you need a prescription drug plan or which one to choose, it’s a good idea to review your options during your plan's annual enrollment period or consult with a Medicare Adviser. Click below to made an appointment we come to you and our services are at no cost to you.
